It’s been unusually quite, considering we’re having an election for County Judge in a few weeks. But, there is a certain feeling in the air, an almost underground-ish feeling. There’s talk at the bar, in line at the grocery store, and at the restaurants. As I drive around town certain political signs are prominent, others are not.
It’s been an almost 20-year political drought that started with the appointment of Val Beard as Brewster County Judge and lets hope it ends with the appointment of Kathy Killingsworth. Could this finally be the election that brings the change Brewster County desperately needs? I think people are finally fed up with Val Beard’s antics.
The cross-section of voters that have joined the campaign in support of Eleazar Cano speaks volumes.” I’m proud that Eleazar Cano has the courage to give us a real option for change in this county. Hopefully the rest us follow suit and finally take back the courthouse from the “Courthouse Gang”.
Once Eleazar is elected, I can only hope that those commissioners and other courthouse office holders that partake in the cronyism that currently permeates the courthouse will resign and save the people of Brewster County the time and money of waiting for the next election to vote them out. Then, our county and communities, like Marathon, can finally get the attention they deserve.
Well, it’s been a while since I’ve wanted to post anything political. The state of our local governments was in a deep decline. I couldn’t keep a train of thought without becoming totally disgusted. It kept leaving a bad taste in my mouth, like vomit rising to the back of my throat. However, a couple of the latest developments has me figiting in my seat.
With the city, many people have been thinking that the firing of city manager Chuy Garcia and the firing and arrest of Ricky Chavez was the crescendo in the city’s financial drama. But, the parting words of resigning city attorney Robert E. Steele should leave a chill down the spine; “The number of issues and the magnitude of the issues need more attention than a single person can provide. While the City needs to look forward, the issues of the past need to be understood and resolved.” We’ll probably be shocked, but it’s gonna be the same ole story of power and greed.
The county, of course, has it’s own saga. As many have seen, the Avalanche has run a series of articles regarding the state of County Judge seat. It was known that County Judge Val Beard was soon to retire. It’s been assumed that she would “appoint” her successor. As the Avalanche reports, in what reads like a complete endorsement, Kathy Killingsworth is that appointee. Of course they don’t forget to mention that she will run for County Judge in the next election as an incumbent. Why anyone buys that newspaper is beyond me.
